Carménère – Organic

The Carménère grape is a wine grape variety originally planted in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France, where it was used to produce deep red wines and occasionally used for blending. Now rarely found in France, the world’s largest area planted with this variety is in Chile in South America, with more than 8,800 hectares. It is almost impossible to find Carménère wines in France today, as a Phylloxera plague in 1867 nearly destroyed all the vineyards of Europe, afflicting the Carménère grapevines in particular that was for many years presumed extinct. When the vineyards were replanted, growers could not replant Carménère as it was extremely hard to find and more difficult to grow. Far from being extinct, in recent years the Carménère grape has been discovered. In Chile, growers preserved the grape variety during the last 150 years, confusing it as Merlot. In 1994, Professor Jean-Michel Boursiquot from the Montpellier’s school of Oenology confirmed that it was in fact Carménère.
V1 Selects are made with grapes from prestigious vineyards; older and mature, these vineyards typically have a small yield, resulting in more intense and complex wines. Los Nogales, is an organic vineyard located in the Maipo Valley, which has the perfect climate for a long growing season. Chile produces the vast majority of Carménère wines available today.

Pairing

Carménère goes terrifically with a wide variety of dishes, especially spicy, savory ones. While highly versatile, Carménère goes particularly well with dishes that contain ingredients such as oregano, rosemary, and thyme, garlic, fennel, red and black pepper, curry powder, saffron, paprika, anise and cumin. Try it with lamb, duck, rabbit, wild boar, or venison.
